The abattoir manager will be responsible for achieving operational profitability targets by leading, developing and motivating all personnel within their department. The prime focus of the role is to provide a safe and supportive working environment for the unit, producing the highest quality product on time and, in so doing, maximising efficiency and exceeding profitability targets. In delivering these results, paramount importance is attached to both environment and safety standards.

  • Building relationships with the site's senior managers and department managers and working with these functions to deliver results through the team
  • Nurture a close relationship with pig buying to ensure attainment to plan and to ensure difficult circumstances are dealt with proactively and professionally
  • Staff are communicated with appropriately and regularly and that staff morale is maintained at the highest possible level to optimise production outcomes at all times
  • Holding daily production target setting discussions with supervisors, focussing on production performance, quality, output, downtime and rework
  • Identifying actions to be taken to address line issues
  • Ensuring product traceability and taking responsibility for staff understanding of traceability requirements
  • Presenting the site at all times, behaving in a professional and courteous manner with both internal and external customers, being audit ready at all times
  • Maintain up to date Industry and legislative knowledge, ensuring full compliance at all times to requirements
  • Attendance at all site quality, non-conformance and HACCP meetings
  • Ensuring that the environmental and health and safety standards are met at all times

Essential experience:

  • Demonstrable track record of achievement in meat production management, preferably with good experience of abattoirs or slaughter lines
  • Previous experience of working in LEAN Manufacturing and a FMCG environment
  • Excellent communicator and team motivator, able to influence, coach and support a team of supervisors to drive their shifts forward with a professional, enthusiastic attitude
  • Determination and resilience to cope with setbacks and to manage difficult circumstances proactively and professionally
  • Animal welfare trained
  • Understand, implement and enforce HACCP principles and procedures
  • Having strong evidence of a health, safety and people engagement agenda playing a key part in your measured success as a leader
  • Experience of working within a performance based culture, establishing budgets and performance targets across the factory and attaining agreed objectives within the agreed financial constraints
  • Strong awareness and understanding of quality and food safety compliance and adhering to statutory requirements

Preferred experience:

  • Butchery knowledge beneficial
  • Experience of working within a performance based culture, establishing budgets and performance targets across the factory and attaining agreed objectives within the agreed financial constraints.
  • NEBOSH or IOSH qualification
