Maintenance Permit Controller

The permit controller is a newly defined role forming part of the engineering team at our Malton production facility. The post holder will ensure the safety of all contractors and personnel on site by developing excellent working relationships with visiting contractors and challenging individuals acting in a potentially hazardous manner.

Key responsibilities:

  • Acting as system keeper and administrator for the Q-perm system, including relevant company reporting
  • Reviewing and authorising risk assessments and method statements (RAM's), competencies and insurance documentation, and challenging and denying site entry where documentation is not fit for purpose
  • Checking in contractors, including tool box and personal protective equipment (PPE) checks and challenging where appropriate and denying site entry
  • Carrying out site induction presentations for contractors including relevant documentation
  • Issuing and closing out permits to work
  • Ensuring the contractor control board is correct and up to date at all times
  • Facilitate appropriate preparation and handover to the next holder of responsibility for permit control for out of hours activity
  • Monitoring and documenting the performance of contractors, at prescribed intervals, ensuring compliance with all legal duties and company health and safety, environmental and food hygiene standards
  • Escalating cases of non-compliance where appropriate and necessary to the engineering manager
  • Administering the computerised planned maintenance system (Pirana)
  • Auditing progress against work orders
  • Generating performance reports

Skills and experience:

  • An engineer, with experience and understanding risk assessments, method statements and dealing with contractors on site
  • Good computer skills, ideally with experience of computerised planned maintenance systems and permit control systems
  • Tenacious and capable of excellent attention to detail
  • Previous experience of ensuring the safety of all contractors and personnel on site and challenging individuals acting in a potentially hazardous manner
  • IOSH managing safely is required but for the right candidate with knowledge , experience and appreciation of health and safety, training may be provided
  • Previous British Retail Consortium (BRC) audit experience in relation to computerised planned maintenance would be advantageous
